i should be doing work
but i’ve been pissed pretty much all day long about the publication of a letter to the editor from an alumna of smith named anne spurzem. she graduated in 84. in approximately 300 words, she managed to get thousands of alumnae riled up over her “observations” that smith was now seen as a safety school for teenage girls in westchester and fairfield counties because it is now a...

The elephant in the room. smithsophian: The Sophian editors are pleased that this LTE has prompted such a vigorous discussion of issues of diversity, classism, racism, and homophobia in the Smith community. We encourage all of our readers to debate this issue in a respectful, thoughtful, and productive manner. Some posts have gone…

Just gave to Planned Parenthood
After Helen Rosner (Smith ‘04, editor of Saveur.com) announced on Facebook that she had set a recurring gift to Planned Parenthood, I made a gift to them too. Nearly 10 years ago, I went to Planned Parenthood of Santa Monica to get the morning-after pill. It was during my summer break from Smith, and I wasn’t sure if I was covered for doctor’s visits outside of Smith’s...

Congratulations, Zimride!
I got the following email from John Zimmer, who was the founder of a vendor I worked with at UCLA Transportation: Hi Sirinya, I wanted to give you a special head’s up that Zimride is going to be on CBS Evening News tonight! It’s usually on around 6:30pm but please check local listings. The story will be within the context of the upcoming Facebook IPO and how companies like Zimride...

Am in love with a squirrel blog →
So this all started when I decided to create a Pinterest account for the UCLA Fund (oh yeah, I should tell my boss this. Oh well.) Anyway, Oberlin College’s Ma’yaan Plout has done a really excellent job with her school’s account, so I decided to look at it to figure out ideas for setting up my own pinterest board. Well, well. She had a board dedicated solely to Albus the...

LOVE Suri's Burn Book
surisburnbook: It seems every three months there is speculation that Jennifer Garner is pregnant. It’s time everyone accepted the fact that Mrs. Affleck just can’t dress herself. Almost everyone is rich enough to afford jeans without holes.

Why it doesn't always make sense to be a renter →
Slate’s Annie Lowrey makes the case that renting is better than owning for many Americans. As she points out, Indeed, dozens of recent studies have shown that, excepting the go-go bubble years, houses tend not to make very good investments at all: A prospective homebuyer would have made more money taking her down payment, parking it in inflation-adjusted Treasury bonds, and renting. ...

Changes
Friday will be my last day at UCLA Transportation. On Monday, June 6th, I will become the Assistant Director of Social Media at the UCLA Fund. (Yes, what a title!) I am super excited and super sad — sad to be leaving my fabulous colleagues in my current job, but excited about the opportunities that lie ahead of me. Wish me luck!

Excitement
Today’s been a busy day. I helped organize a tweet-up with some fellow peeps at UCLA that I correspond with but had never met. It’ll take place next Friday. It should be interesting.

For the record
According to the draft Environmental Impact Report for the Metro Westside Subway Extension, (Chapter 1, pg. 5), 53,122 people work in Westwood as of 2006, per the 2008 SCAG Regional Transportation Plan. Just in case, you know, you happen to be writing a report, an op-ed, a blog entry, whatever, and you happen to have a vested interest in the Westwoodian transportation network, which I do.
